Helen R. Anderson

March 11, 1933 - July 27, 2022

HelenandersonPICHelen R. Anderson was born March 11, 1933, in Geneva, IL the daughter of Ragnar and Anna (Johnson) Anderson. She died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 27 at Michaelsen Health Center in Batavia, IL at the age of 89 years.

Helen attended Peck School in rural Geneva and graduated from Geneva High School in the class of 1951. Helen attended Cottey College, Nevada, MO (class of 1953) and Augustana College, Rock Island, IL (class of 1955). She was united in marriage to Jerome “Jerry” Anderson on November 26, 1959 (Thanksgiving Day) at Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia, IL.

Helen worked as a teacher for over 30 years; 3 years in Lombard, 3 years in St. Charles, 10 years as a substitute in Batavia schools and the remainder of her tenure spent full-time teaching second grade at J.B. Nelson School in Batavia.  After retirement in 1993, she continued subbing an additional 10 years while also starting her new job as “Grandma Anderson.”

Helen was a member of the Viljan Vasa Lodge #349, Batavia, IL; life member of IEA/NEA Retired Educators, and life member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Batavia,IL. She was a girl scout leader, and volunteered at Bethany for many years on committees, church council, Hesed House, was instrumental in starting the altar guild and played in the bell choir.

Helen is survived by her daughters: Julie (Tom) Wawczak, and Polly (David) Wiebke; grandchildren: Rachel (Brian) Bellrichard, Elizabeth Wiebke, and Benjamin Wawczak;great-grandchild: Charlotte; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and some cousins and other family in Sweden.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her siblings: Vernern Anderson, Robert Anderson, Mary Ann Hubbard, and Inga Holzl.

Interment will be private at River Hills Memorial Park, Batavia, IL 60510. The family will host a brief visitation starting at 10:00am, and a memorial service for Helen at 11:00am on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 South Lincoln St., Batavia, IL 60510. Completed covid vaccinations and masks are strongly encouraged by the family for those planning on attending in person. Please do not attend if you have any symptoms of illness.

The family requests no flowers or plants at the church and instead ask if you choose to give monetary memorials please do so to one of the following:

-Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence, Batavia, IL

-Holden Village, Lake Chelan County, WA
