Donald J. D'Amico

October 16, 1930 - August 23, 2021

Donald J. D’Amico of Easley, South Carolina passed away Monday, August 23, 2021.  Donald was born October 16, 1930, in Chicago, the son of Alfred and Mary (nee Yaccino) D’Amico.  Donald married Mary Lou Kaine December 28, 1951, and together they raised four sons.

Dr. D’Amico was an educator.  He began his teaching and administrative career in Saybrook, IL in 1952, followed by the position of Superintendent of the Manhattan Illinois Elementary Schools.  In 1960, he went to Lincoln-way High School as Assistant Superintendent for instruction.  Dr. D’Amico the was appointed Superintendent of Joliet Elementary Schools where he served for eleven years.  He left Joliet in 1975 to accept a Superintendent’s position with the St. Charles school district.  During his tenure in St. Charles, he built St. Charles East High School, the Delora Norris Cultural Arts Center, and the Recreation Center.

D’Amico was appointed to the Illinois School Problems Commission serving three governors.  He was appointed Legislative liaison between the Illinois Association of School Administrators and the Illinois State Board of Education.    He was appointed to the Board of Higher Education Task Force studying teacher education.  Dr. D’Amico started the first urban teacher education training center in cooperation with Illinois State University. 

Dr. D’Amico was a also a university professor having taught at Lewis College, Northern Illinois University, and Aurora University.  He was a member of the Board of Higher Education Task Force of Teacher Education.  He received a distinguished service award from Illinois State University for his work in teacher education.  In addition to his professional work and his numerous civic activities, he published many articles on education. 

D'Amico was active in his community as well serving on numerous boards including Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Baker Board.  He was also a member of the Exchange Club.  He received the distinguished service award from Illinois State University, was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and a life member of the PTA.  He also helped organize and served on the Board of Directors for Valley Community Bank. 

In retirement he volunteered to serve as “Clerk of the Works” supervising the construction of St. Patrick Church on Crane Road in St. Charles.  Later he served as adjunct professor at Aurora University teaching philosophy of education. 

Don is survived by sons, Donald D'Amico (Suzanne) of Celina, TX, Mark D'Amico (Gail) of Marco Island, FL, Greg D'Amico (Annie) of Champaign, IL, and Tom D'Amico of San Diego, CA; three brothers, Al, Larry, and Bobby D'Amico; a sister, Gloria Scaletta; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wife of 56 years, Mary Lou D'Amico; and a brother, Johnny D'Amico.

A memorial mass will be held October 16, 2021, beginning at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patrick Catholic Church; 6N491 Crane Road, St. Charles, IL.  Interment to follow at Prairie Cemetery.
